Position Summary: 

 The Unified Government Public Health Department (UGPHD) is seeking applicants for a Health Equity Coordinator position. Wyandotte County, KS, experiences some of the poorest health outcomes in the state of Kansas and some of the starkest inequities in terms of who is experiencing those poor health outcomes. This position will use a data driven and evidence-based approach, in alignment with the department’s strategic priorities, to provide technical expertise, project management, and leadership related to the development, implementation, and oversight of health equity initiatives. Most of this position’s work is community-based, but the position will support some internal DEI efforts. Current community-based initiatives include Racism as a Public Health Crisis, and the Health Equity Task Force. This work includes planning and implementing collaborative projects and will require a wide variety of technical and relationship skills. If you are a skilled leader who is passionate about public health, the Director of the Wyandotte County Health Department is an opportunity to positively affect the health of our 165,000 residents, and address some of the most challenging issues facing public health.
The Public Health Department is in a period of transition. As the COVID public health emergency recedes, and COVID funding decreases, the Department is shifting focus to other health priorities, and readjusting resource allocation. The Department performed admirably during the COVID pandemic, and in the 2022 Community Survey 76% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the Department took the appropriate steps during COVID to protect the health of resident. The next Director will assume leadership of a department with a strong base of public trust. That person will need to be a deft leader who can guide the Health Department forward through this transition, build upon public trust, and continue progress on the many health challenges that impact the health ranking of a low-income community like Wyandotte County.
The Department recently completed the Community Health Assessment and is in the process of developing the next iteration of the Community Health Improvement Plan in conjunction with community partners. The Department has embraced the Public Health 3.0 model, focusing on social determinants of health, in addition to providing core direct care services. The current initiatives of the Health Department include public engagement and policy recommendations to address Racism and a Public Health Crisis; the opioid epidemic; violence reduction efforts in conjunction with law enforcement; management of a HUD Lead Abatement grant; and managing a Tuberculosis outbreak and other infection diseases.
The work of the Health Department depends heavily on partnership with other Unified Government Departments, community partner organizations, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Center for Disease Control, and the ability of the Director to coordinate and facilitate good working relationships with these partners is an essential part of the Director role.
The Director is responsible for a $7M+ budget, which includes 35 grant funded programs, ~120 employees, and operations across all Health divisions.
