KUMC Offering PH Grand Rounds Series - Continuing Education

Information on the Kansas Public Health Grand Rounds Series

On a daily basis, we see new developments in public health, including new national and local initiatives, new research, new threats, new policies and new opportunities to improve the public health. Staying abreast of these new developments is a monumental task.

The Kansas Association for Local Health Departments, Kansas Department of Health and Environment and KU Medical Center’s Department of Preventive Medicine and Area Health Education Centers are collaborating on a series of educational programs focusing on current issues in public health. This series is an outgrowth of the KU Public Health Seminar course and builds on other models of continuing education in public health. The series will occur live on Wednesdays from 12:00 – 1:00 between August and December via the internet. We will be able to offer the series to 30 locations across Kansas.

Topics planned for the fall series include: Influenza Update 2007; Health Care Worker Mandated Influenza Vaccination; BRFSS Update; Comprehensive Cancer Plan Progress; MCH Initiative Proposal; School Health Services/Bright Futures Modules; Disaster Preparedness and Agency Response; Ozone in Kansas/Clean Air Act; and Indoor Air Quality legislation.

The fee for the entire fall series (a total of 15 sessions) will be $100 per site (or internet connection) and will include continuing education credit for physicians and nurses employed by your organization and attending at your location. A total of 30 internet connections are available on a “first come, first served” basis. In order to make the series available to as many organizations as possible, we will limit connections to one per organization.

A total of 30 internet connections are available for the series. We are limiting the connections to one per organization, so we will be able to offer the series to a maximum of 30 sites. Organizations will register as a site once for the entire series, not for individual sessions. Space is available on a “first come, first served” basis. Time slot for “technology test” on July 25:

Fee:
$100 per site for the fall series (total of 15 sessions). Sites may log on for any, or all, of the sessions. The fee will remain the same; it will not be prorated based upon the number of sessions attended.

Continuing Education Credit/Certificates of Attendance:
The site fee will include continuing education credit for physicians and nurses and a certificate of attendance for other individuals that are employed by your organization and attending at your site. A transcript will be issued at the conclusion of the series; certificates will not be issued for each individual session.

Technology Test:
In order to allow ample time for troubleshooting prior to the first session, we are requesting all sites to participate in a “technology test” on Wednesday, July 25. Time slots for the “technology test” on July 25 will be 9:00 – 10:00; 1:00 – 2:00 or 3:00- 4:00. Instructions for “Elluminate Setup Requirements” are located at http://www2.kumc.edu/ir/tlt/elluminate/elluminatesystemreqs.htm and should be reviewed prior to the technology test.

When you register for the series, please indicate the time you will connect for the test. It is very important that each site complete this test.

Note to MPH students:
This series will also be offered for academic credit in KU’s MPH program. The Grand Rounds is built around the Public Health Seminar (PRVM 805), a long standing course in the department. Seminar students who participate in the Grand Rounds will fulfill their requirements for the course. Regional Quality Improvement Training

All fifteen public health regions were represented at the Quality Improvement Training held in Wichita on March 5-7th at Old Town Conference Center. Stacy Baker from the Public Health Foundation led the training. The training covered the Plan-Do-Check-Act approach to quality management, how to identify the "root causes" of problems, and introduction to a number of quality improvement tools such as Affinity Diagrams, Fishbone Diagrams, Nominal Group Technique, Prioritization Matrices, Control/Influence/Concern Charts, and Process Mapping.
