Immunizations

Immunizations available for infants, children, adolescents and adults. We can provide information about the immunizations that are required or recommended when planning for foreign travel. Infants’ shots should start @ 2 months of age.

Call 785-798-3388. Walk in’s welcome. Always bring your immunization records to any visit to the department.

Early Detection Works

Kansas Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening and Detection Program.

Breast exams and mammograms by appointment only, call 785-798-3388.

Hours

Tuberculin tests are administered on Monday (9 am-12 pm, 1-5 pm). They are read on Thursday (9-12 pm).

Fees

Prophylactic treatment is provided free of charge. TB test requires fee payment.

Child Health Assessments

Health assessments are provided to children for first time Kansas school entrants, Child Care required assessments and Health Wave-eligible to age 19, or Medicaid with referral-eligible to age 21.

WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children)

WIC program is intended for pregnant and nursing women, infants, and children to age 5 living in Ness County who meet income guidelines and have a nutritional risk.

Services include

  • nutritious foods that supply specific nutrients
  • nutrition education
  • regular assessments
  • breastfeeding support

You may be eligible for WIC services if you answer yes to any of the following questions:

Are you pregnant?
Have you had a baby recently?
Are you breastfeeding a baby?
Do you have a child less than 5 years old?

Hours

WIC visits are from 8:30am – 11:30 am in the odd month on 1st Friday after second Monday. If you are a new client, call the Barton County Health Department after the second Monday at 620-793-1902 to schedule an appointment.

Child Care Facilities Program

Child care licensing program helps in protecting the health, safety and welfare of children in care away from their own homes.

This service is supplied by KDHE. The contact person is Connie Miller at Barton County Health Department 620-793-1902.

  • on-site annual evaluation visits of licensed facilities
  • initial inspection visits of the day car home or center to verify compliance with state regulations
  • investigation of complaints
  • consultation visits
  • providing information to those interested in becoming licensed or registered child care providers
  • child care orientation class the 3rd Thursday @ 3 p.m., each month.

Location

Connie Miller, surveyor, inspects and evaluates licensed child care facilities in Ness County and investigates complaints in licensed and registered facilities.

Depends on the type of facility. Initial and annual local fees apply in addition to State Fees.

Maternal and Infant Program and Newborn Home Visits

Services provided to pregnant and parenting teen and low-income women:

  • education related to pregnancy and parenting
  • helping obtain prenatal medical care
  • support and counseling
  • links to community resources
  • home visits by Registered Nurse

Location

Services are offered at the Health Department and in clients’ homes.

Fee

None.

Expectant Parent Classes (EPC)

Ness County is included in this service at the location given below.

EPC classes are offered to expectant parents to provide education and guidance to prepare for childbirth and caring for an infant. Classes meet for two hours twice a week for three weeks. A tour of the Central Kansas Medical Center labor and delivery unit is included. Classes are taught by a registered nurse and the healthy start home visitor. Topics include, labor and delivery relaxation techniques, mother’s recovery, fathers role, and numerous infant care topics. Class participation is encouraged. Films, charts and hands on opportunities are provided.

A fee or suggested donation is charged for clinic services, but no one will be denied services due to inability to pay.

Community Health Promotion and Education

Health Department staff develops and provide presentations on health issues requested by groups and organizations, distribute brochures and other printed materials on a variety of topics at community events, and offer free blood-pressure, hemoglobin and blood glucose screening clinics at community locations listed below. 1st Tuesday of the month - Ness City Leisure Years 11am- 12pm.

2nd Tuesday of the month – Brownell VFW 11am-12pm.

2nd Wednesday of the month – Ransom Senior Center 11am – 12pm.

3rd Tuesday of the month – Utica Senior Center 10:30am – 11:30 am.

Healthy Start Home Visitor

Home visits made by trained staff before and soon after your baby is born.

  • Answer questions about pregnancy, infant care, feeding and mother’s recovery.
  • Friendly support, listens and shares experience
  • Provides information about prenatal care, baby care, nutrition, immunizations, breastfeeding and safety
  • Help find community resources
  • Encourages you to contact your doctor with any health concerns
  • Information on infant development, play, discipline and much more
  • Helpful nutrition information

Home visitors are mothers and grandmothers themselves who have been trained to help other mothers with their concerns. The home visitor works with the public health registered nurse who may also make home visits as needed.

Volunteer Opportunities

Ness County Health Department would need volunteers to provide support to the Ness County Health Department during a public health emergency.
